Do I Smell Bad?

Ladies, don’t forget that we are all different! All our vaginas have our own natural scent to it & we aren’t supposed to smell like flowers! However, understanding our bodies is soooo important and especially our vaginas, which is why we have to pay attention to the different smells we may experience and decide what’s normal and what isn’t.

NORMAL: THE FOODS WE EAT

Some foods we eat can be more pungent than others and have a major effect on how we may smell and taste.

Culprits: broccoli, onions & asparagus... these are good for our bodies but can affect the smell. Note: if your partner is into that then more life to you!

Fried foods, meats and processed foods are also major culprits. Vegans reap the most benefits for their yoni as their diets are plant based and have less processed foods 💦

NORMAL: TANGY OR SOUR SMELL

Don’t be alarmed! This is completely normal. Our vaginas are naturally acidic, this helps our vaginas to fight off infections and harmful bacteria.

NORMAL: SWEET SMELL

Your vagina just smells sweet. Generally it’s nothing to be worried about, just a slight fluctuation in your PH balance! 🌸

NORMAL: SWEATY SMELL

We have loads of sweat glands around our genital region called apocrine glands that contain protein. Pubic hair can cause excess moisture and bacteria which may lead to the ‘sweaty’ smell and can also lead to infections if not cleaned properly. Exercise can also contribute to this, so make sure you wear cotton underwear and freshen up as soon as you can!

NORMAL: ’COPPER’ OR LIKE ‘METAL’

This smell normally occurs during our menstrual cycle and sometimes lingers a day or so after. Our blood contains iron which contributes to the ‘metal’ smell. Most women experience this, you’re not the only one! If this smell occurs when you’re not on your cycle, it’s best to visit your doctor.

NORMAL: CHEMICAL OR BLEACH SMELL

If your vagina smells like this after sex, it could be that you’ve used products that have chemicals in them such as condoms or lube. The smell should wear off in a few hours. Another reason could be dehydration, our urine contains ammonia which has a strong ‘chemical’ smell when concentrated. Just drink more water, clean your vulva and change your panties 😚.

If you’ve exhausted these options, this smell could also be a sign of bacterial vaginosis. Visit your GP and get a proper diagnosis!

NOT NORMAL: FISHY SMELL

If your vagina has a strong fishy smell, it is most likely a sign of bacterial vaginosis, this caused by an overgrowth of bacteria. You’ll notice a change of texture in your discharge and a ‘rotten fish’ smell.

Trichomoniasis, may also be to blame for the fishy odour. Unlike BV, trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection . Women may experience genital itching, burning, soreness and unusual discharge. Both are traditionally treated with antibiotics.

NOT NORMAL: ROTTEN EGGS

Change your sanitary pad regularly. It’s always best to change your pad as often as you can to avoid this, change your panties and freshen up with a mild soap and/or water throughout the day. Try using a pad that isn’t deodorising, some women find its better suited with their natural scent.

A forgotten tampon may also be the reason for this offensive odour, it happens more often than you think and can be very dangerous. If unable to locate, visit your GP for support.
